Tiger Bay Training runs a full range of RYA cruising courses from beginner to advanced levels.
Courses are run aboard our Bavaria 37 ‘Tiger II’ and Hanse 40 ‘Jammel’. Both vessels were built (in 2006 and 2007 respectively) to TBT’s exacting specification and are fitted with all the latest equipment including electronic chart plotter, fridge, hot water, heating (essential for spring, autumn and winter courses) and a full compliment of safety gear. Both vessels sleep up to 6 persons in 3 cabins with room for two more in the saloon.
Your RYA Cruising Course will be run by one of TBT’s small team of expert instructors. We pride ourselves not only on our ability to provide some of the best tuition available, but on our warm, friendly approach.
Course fees include all meals taken aboard, fuel and mooring fees. During your course you will occasionally eat breakfast and evening meals at pubs and cafes carefully selected by the Tiger Bay team (bank on about £3.50 - £5.00 and £7-£10 each respectively).
You will need to bring along plenty of warm clothes, your wash kit and a sleeping bag; sunglasses, sun cream, and a hat are a good idea.
We supply quality waterproof suits for you but you will need to bring along your own footwear (yachting wellies are the best and are available from the TBT shop).
Our most popular courses include:
RYA Start Yachting – a 2 or 3 day introductory course for complete beginners. After a night aboard you spend the morning sailing in Cardiff Bay before passing through the Barrage locks en-route to your stopover on the Welsh or Somerset coast. A great weekend of skills, fun and excitement.
RYA Competent Crew – a full 5 days aboard for beginners looking to ‘learn the ropes’ either during the week or over 2 weekends. Our expert instructors will take you through a wide range of yachting skills at a variety of fantastic locations in the Bristol Channel and beyond.
RYA Day Skipper – an inspiring 5 day practical course for those with some experience (5 days, 100 miles, 4 night hours recommended) who are looking to build confidence and skipper a yacht by day.
RYA Coastal Skipper – a 5 day practical course taking the more experienced yachtsman through the skills necessary to skipper a yacht on longer passages and at night.
RYA Yachtmaster Preparation – a demanding 5 day practical course giving the experienced yachtsman the opportunity to hone their skills in preparation for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore examination.
ICC Preparation/Examination – training towards and testing for the International Certificate of Competence, a legal requirement in many countries.
Own-boat Tuition – boat-handling, passage making, navigation and full RYA courses aboard your own boat.
