Powerboating Courses

Tiger Bay Training runs a full range of RYA powerboat courses from beginner to advanced levels.

Courses are run aboard our custom-designed Ribcraft 6.2m/135 hp RIB ‘Tiger’ both in Cardiff Bay and in the Bristol Channel. ‘Tiger’ is equipped with a full compliment of safety equipment and state of the art Raymarine A65 digital chart plotter and depth sounder.

TBT provides powerboat training for numerous organisations and government agencies including: Cardiff Harbour Authority, The Environment Agency, Countryside Council for Wales, Quay Marinas LTD, HM Armed Forces etc. Our courses are run by a small team of Advanced Instructors who ensure that you are taking part in some of the best powerboat training available in the UK.

Our most popular courses include:

RYA National Powerboat Certificate (Level II) – a 2 day practical course taking you through a full range of skills including: launch and recovery, low and high speed manoeuvres, berthing, anchoring, IRPCS, basic navigation, man-overboard and lots more. After completing this course you should be confident (and competent) to take your own powerboat to sea during daylight hours. Successful completion of the RYA Level II course also entitles you to the International Certificate of Competence needed to legally drive powerboats abroad.

RYA Safety Boat – a 2 day practical course covering the skills required to act as a safety boat for fleets of dinghies, windsurfers and canoes. Candidates should hold the RYA Level II Certficate prior to attending this course.

RYA Day Cruising (Intermediate) Powerboat – a 2 day practical course for holders of the RYA Level II qualification who would like to raise their skills to a level where they can plan and execute more ambitious passages. During this course passage planning and pilotage skills such as plotting a course to steer and putting together a pilotage plan are covered thoroughly ashore then practiced for real at a variety of destinations in the Bristol Channel. This course is particularly popular on an ‘own boat’ basis and covers both traditional and electronic navigation methods.

RYA Advanced Powerboat – a 2 day practical course taking the experienced powerboat handler through the skills needed to safely pilot a performance powerboat in more testing conditions and at night. This advanced-level qualification covers advanced navigation (including at night), advanced boat handling, powerboat handling in waves, searching sea areas and helicopter rescue. In addition to holding the RYA Level II certificate and several years experience, candidates should have a thorough theoretical knowledge to the level of Day Skipper prior to attending the this course.

RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat (Commercial) – an advanced examination based qualification for the professional powerboat handler. Tiger Bay Training provides an expert service to candidates looking to attain this benchmark qualification including: personal assessment, pre-examination testing/training and arranging examination.
